Fascinating article by Bettina Arnold of the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee on the manipulation of science and the development of pseudo-archaeology in Nazi Germany:

  1. In 1965 I was a student at Heidelberg, There were then still a number of scholars who had actively co-operated with Nazi archaeological efforts. I remember particularly one classicist who had scoured museums in Greece looking for archaic and Dark Age relics displaying swastikas. Of course, in the post-war years all had renounced the Nazis and quietly eliminated articles supporting Nazi material from their bibliographies. Younger scholars despised these relics from the previous regime, but the power structure of German universities long kept the ex-Nazis in power.
